“Corn Sister”

Corn Sister

Steve (Silver Bear) McComber (b. 1955), a Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) carved this sculpture honoring the corn sister, one of the Iroquois three sisters in 2004. When the three sisters (corn, beans and squash) are planted together, they are thought to be spiritual and physical sustainers of life.

The interpretive exhibit in Memorial Hall Museum’s Native Room includes a vessel made and used by Native Americans in Deerfield between 6,000 and 3,000 years ago; many stone tools; birch bark containers and baskets from the 19th century; beadwork and other decorative work—as well as objects recently created by native artists, such as this sculpture.
