COURAGE AND PEACE:
The Works of Robert Strong Woodward
May 3 through June 22, 2025
Memorial Hall Museum
1st Floor – Music Gallery
Created in collaboration with the Friends of Robert Strong Woodward, this spring’s temporary exhibit highlights 21 of his works, including newly discovered and rarely exhibited pieces. Robert Strong Woodward (1885-1957) was an acclaimed landscape and still-life painter from Franklin County. His work features beautiful scenes from western Massachusetts and southern Vermont.
The oil on canvas painting, Courage and Peace, depicts the Carter farm on Avery Road in nearby Buckland, MA. Woodward sold it to his great benefactor, Ada Small Moore, who gave him his cars, including the iconic Packard. Moore helped Woodward financially so he could continue painting when sales were slow. Courage and Peace by Robert Strong Woodward, c. 1932; on loan, private collection.
